940 jefferson avenue
address: 940 jefferson avenue, miami beach, united states
architect: lawrence murray dixon
date: 1940
This modest but meticulously renovated Art Deco building was one of a series of similar buildings Lawrence Murray Dixon designed on Miami Beach. Each combines a "rule of three", or tripartite, facade organization and a miniature cupola centered atop the parapet. The front stairway is prominently featured through vertical strips of corrugated and clear glass above the front door, wich is framed in a reasonable approximaton of original black Vitrolite. Its dignified gently stepping facade should be contrasted with the rougher and less street-friendly front of 945 Jefferson Avenue, the more contemporary structure directly across the street. The effect of streamling is visible in radiused eyebrows and the cylindrical drums that frame the stair-hall windows.
